KILIM RUGS
Kilim rugs are known for their bright colors along with the patterns and symbols woven on it adding to its beauty and very well appreciated by buyers. They can be used for decoration or simply as prayer rugs. These rugs are very ancient and have evidence of existence since 1700-1800 BC. Kilim is considered to have come from Arabic word meaning curtain, indicating that they were initially used as wall hangings for decoration.
These rugs were at first used and made in ethnic surroundings. Being made up of strong materials they were used by nomadic people as blankets, horse accessories, saddle bags and wrapping around goods. The kilim rugs have designs with a geometric shape and have symbols or motifs made on it which has different meanings on the basis of ancient viewpoint and mythology. Regional variations accompany depending upon the area they are made in. The eye motif is considered to be a charm against misfortune. The ram’s horn symbolizes power and productiveness. Bird motif is the symbol for freedom and good news. Spider symbol indicates holiness. Among other symbols used in kilim rugs are Wheat ear motif, Snake motif, Diamond shaped and the Pomegranate.
These rugs are fine and made from natural materials such as cotton, wool and silk. Wool is the most common material used because of its abundance in the areas it is woven. To create certain effects animal hair is used. Camel hair provides additional strength. An additional shine may be added to the rug by goat hair. Horse hair is also used to add on the look of the rug. Nowadays Silk, gold, silver threads and other decorative items are being used to create innovative Kilim rugs. These rugs can provide a traditional tinge to your interiors.
